In Thane, Maharashtra, nine police officers have been suspended due to alleged negligence while transporting seven undertrial prisoners for medical examinations. A senior official confirmed this development.
The official reported on Friday that an investigation revealed several irregularities during the transport of the prisoners to Kalwa Civic Hospital on August 4.
Based on these findings, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters-2) Dr. Pawan Bansod issued the suspension orders.
Details of the Investigation
The investigation indicated that the police team failed to adequately supervise the prisoners, raising suspicions of misconduct.
During the medical check-up at the hospital, it was discovered that only five out of the seven prisoners were present. One prisoner was not even handcuffed, and a team member was found talking on a mobile phone instead of performing their duties.
Miscommunication and Discovery
Following this, the police team allegedly misled their superiors regarding the whereabouts of the two missing prisoners.
Initially, they claimed that the prisoners had gone for X-rays. However, upon checking the X-ray department and surrounding areas, no trace of them was found. The team later suggested that the prisoners had gone to the restroom, but they were not located there either.
Ultimately, both missing prisoners were located at 3:50 PM.
The suspended officers include Gangaram Ghule, Girish Patil, Vilas Mohite, Kishor Shirke, Ashok Munde, Sandeep Kharat, Sunil Nikhalje, Bharat Jaybhay, and Vikram Jambure.
